The Anagen phase can last between 2 to 7 years, varying significantly between individuals. This is the period of active expansion where the hair follicle generates fresh hair cells. About 85-90% of the hairs on your head are in this phase at any given time. Hair grows approximately 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) per month during this phase. The hair bulb at the base of the follicle is where cell division occurs. It receives nutrients from the blood supply to grow new hair.
The Catagen phase lasts for a short period of about 2 to 3 weeks. This is a short transitional stage marking the end of active hair growth. The hair follicle shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla, which supplies nutrients to the growing hair. The hair follicle moves closer to the surface of the skin. Melanin production in the hair bulb ceases, so no new pigment is added to the hair. The hair shaft, now fully formed, retains its existing color.
The Telogen phase lasts for about 2 to 4 months. During this phase, the hair follicle is inactive, and the hair does not grow. About 10-15% of the hairs on your head are in this phase at any given time. Hair remains in the follicle but is not actively growing. This phase allows the follicle to rest and regenerate. While the visible hair is in a state of rest, the follicle is preparing for the next Anagen phase.
The Exogen phase can last from 2 to 5 months. This is the phase where old hair is shed and new hair begins to grow. It overlaps with the Anagen phase of the new hair. Characteristics: You might notice hair shedding during washing or brushing. It's a natural part of the cycle, and about 50-150 hairs are shed daily. As the old hair is shed, new hair growth begins to emerge from the same follicle, starting the new Anagen phase.
Hair fall, or hair loss, can be a distressing issue that affects many people worldwide and can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, stress, hormonal imbalances, and poor nutrition. It can manifest in various forms, from thinning hair to complete bald patches. Understanding the causes and exploring potential solutions can help manage and potentially reverse hair loss. At Ebhaya, we offer a comprehensive approach to hair loss, focusing on the underlying causes and providing natural, effective treatments based on the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda.
